Uppu Urundai/Neer Urundai/Kaara Kozhukattai for Vinayaka Chathurthi

As a parent we are responsible to give our kids healthy, nutritious and yummy foods. When it comes to evening snacks we have to think something new all the time. This same uppu urundai is otherwise called as kaara kozhukattai for Vinayaka Chathurthi in India. Vinayaka Chathurthi is the birthday of Lord Ganesha celebrated all over India and many other parts of the world by the Indians. Kozhukattai is nothing but a rice dumpling made by steaming, it can be made both sweet and spicy version. Here I have made the Kaara Kozhukattai/Uppu urundai/Neer urundai the spicy version and I will be posting sweet version of kozhukattai in the future post. I remember my mom making it in our school days... Now I do it for my kids....


Ingredients

For Grinding

Parboiled rice      -           1 cup
Water as needed

For Tempering

Mustard                                                   1/2 tsp
Jeeragam                                                1/2 tsp
Kadalaiparuppu                                     1/2 tsp
Ulluthamparuppu                                 1/2 tsp    
Perungayam(asfoetida)                      one small pinch
RedChillies                                             2 or 3   
Curry leaves
Cilantro
Grated coconut                                    2 tsp
Salt and oil as required.

Method

Wash and soak the rice for 2 to 3 hours.
Drain the water and grind it like idli batter, it should be coarse.
In a pan, add oil and splutter with tempering ingredients (except cilantro and grated coconut).
Now add the rice batter, grated coconut and mix it.

Keep the stove in medium, the batter will start to thicken as shown in the photo.


Turn off the stove. Check if the dough is ready by making small balls in the hand.
Now add the cilantro(coriander leaves). Leave the dough to cool for 5 to 10 mins.
Start making small balls and steam it in the idli cooker for 10 to 12 mins.

Now yummy uppu urundai is ready ....
Serve it with chutney or sambar and enjoy.
