South Indian Shrimp/Prawn/Eral Thokku

Shrimp thokku is a very yummy dish which my mom makes all the time. I just love the taste of the masala, which I can never forget. I learnt this recipe from my mom and my  kids just love them. Your menu for the day can be very simple like milagu rasam and shrimp thooku with white rice.

Ingredients

Shrimp/prawns
300 gm
Onions
3 big (finely chopped)
Tomatoes
3 big (finely chopped)
Ginger & Garlic paste
2 tbsp
Green Chillies
3(finely chopped)
Cumin
¼ tsp
Red chilli powder
1 tbsp
Coriander powder
2 tsp
Cumin powder
½ tsp
Curry leaves
5
Coriander leaves
1 tbsp finely chopped
Turmeric powder
½ tsp
Salt
As needed
Oil
1 tbsp

Method
Clean, wash and devein the shrimp really good. Add some turmeric powder and wash it, so that it will be clean.

In a kadai heat oil, add cumin seeds followed by onions, sauté until golden brown. Now add green chillies and tomatoes, sauté until mushy. Add the Ginger & Garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell goes off.

Now add the red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and mix them well. Add 1/4 cup water and let it cook for 10 min’s. Now add the washed shrimp, cumin powder,1 tsp of coriander leaves mix it real good.

Cook the shrimp for 10 min’s or until the masala separates out of the oil. Add rest of the coriander leaves and now yummy shrimp masala is ready to be served.

Note:

  • Shrimp cooks real fast, so if u keep it in the stove for very long time it will turn very chewy.
  • I always wash all the sea foods, chicken or goat meat with turmeric powder when they are raw so that when you cook you will not get any smell.

  1. Thanks for the tips of cleaning the prawns with turmeric. Normally I add into the gravy. Its good way of removing the odour too. Awesome recipe and I see the prawns drenched in the thick spicy gravy.
