Sutta Kathirkai Chutney/Brinjal Chutney/ Egg Plant chutney[Side dish for Idlis & Dosas]

Sutta Kathrikai Chutney/Brinjal Chutney/Eggplant chutney, is a very special chutney and excellent side dish for idlis and dosa. It has the wonderful smokey flavor which makes it very unique.  Check out other delectable chutneys here.

Here's how to make it with step by step photos...

Ingredients

Brinjal
1 big
Onion
1 finely chopped (small)
Tamarind
1 small gooseberry sized ball
Urad dhal
1 tsp
Cumin seeds
¼ tsp
Dry red chillies
2 (add according to taste)
Methi seeds/Vendhayam
¼ tsp
Oil
2 tsp
Asafoetida
1 pinch
Salt
As needed

For Tempering

Oil
1 tsp
Mustard seeds
¼ tsp
Cumin seeds
¼ tsp
Urad dhal
½ tsp
Curry leaves

Dry red chillies

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Method
Apply oil all over the brinjal and keep it in the stove as shown in the photo. Cook the brinjal in flame, turning it on all the sides well. Switch off the stove. After the brinjal cools down, peel off the skin and keep it aside.


In a pan heat 1 tsp of oil add methiseeds, urad dhal, cumin seeds, red chillies, asafoetida one by one and sauté for 20 sec. After it cools blend it in the mixer. Add the brinjal, tamarind, salt and run the mixer. Transfer it to a bowl and keep the chutney aside.


Now in the pan add ingredients mentioned for tempering and when done add it to the chutney. Again add 1 tsp of oil, saute the onions until translucent and mix it chutney.


Yummy kathrikkai chutney is ready. You can eat it with idlis, dosas or also spread it over chappathi roll it and eat it.
