Chicken Xacuti - Goan Curry/Chicken Xacuti Recipe/How to make Chicken Xacuti with step by step photos

Chicken Xacuti is a unique and a famous curry prepared in Goa, India. It has wonderful blend of fresh spices, cooked with coconut milk and tamarind water which results in spicy and flavourful gravy. The actual recipe calls for Kashmiri chillies since I did not get them, I have replaced it with dry red chillies. Though I have been to Goa only once, but I have a special craving for Goan dishes. Method:
Preparation:
Clean, wash and cut the chicken. Add turmeric powder and wash it thoroughly. Now grind the ingredients mentioned for marinating and add it to the chicken, mix it well and keep it for ½ to 1 hour aside.

In a kadai dry roast the ingredients mentioned in Table I, remove it and transfer it to a plate.

In the same kadai add 1 tsp of oil, saute the onions until translucent followed by grated coconut [from Table II], remove it and transfer it to a plate.

Let everything cool down, grind everything [table I & table II]  together to a fine paste in a mixer by adding required amount of water. Keep this masala paste for later.

Extract about 1 cup of tamarind water from the small ball of tamarind and keep it aside. Similarly extract 1 cup of coconut milk and keep it aside.

Now making the chicken xacuti…

Heat oil in kadai or pressure cooker, add onions saute until translucent. Now add curry leaves, tomatoes and saute until it turns mushy.

Add the marinated chicken and saute for about 5- 6 min.

Add the ground masala paste, red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and mix really well.

Add the tamarind water and let it cook for about 20 min or 2 whistles in pressure cooker.

Now add the coconut milk, coriander leaves and let it boil for another 5-7 min.

Switch off the stove and delicious Goan Chicken Xacuti is ready to be enjoyed.

Suggestions:
You can very well adjust the spice level according to your taste, if you want it less spicy you can very well skip the red chilli powder and coriander powder and make the gravy.
