Beetroot Poriyal/Beetroot Stir Fry Recipe

Hello friends,

Today I am going to share a very simple, healthy and quick Beetroot Poriyal. This is perfect and lovely accompaniment for any rice varieties or any type of rotis or naans. With not much of introduction I am moving on to the recipe. Meanwhile do not forget to checkout other delectable vegetable poriyal varieties here.

Here’s how to make Beetroot Poriyal with step by step photos…


2 chopped
Sambar Powder
1 ½ tsp
Turmeric Powder
One big pinch
Grated Coconut
3 tbsp
As needed

For Tempering

2 tsp
Mustard Seeds
½ tsp
Cumin Seeds
½ tsp
Urad Dhal
¾ tsp
Dry Red Chillies
2 or 3
Curry Leaves
One big pinch
Preparation Time: 10-15 minutes
Cooking Time: 20-25 minutes


Wash and peel the beetroots. Now the chop the beetroot to fine cubes or grate it with grater.

Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, add cumin seeds, urad dhal, curry leaves , asafoetida powder and saute for 20 seconds.

Now add the chopped beetroots and stir really well for 2 minutes.

Add the sambar powder, turmeric powder, salt and mix thoroughly.

Add ¼ cup of water, cover and cook the beetroot for 4-6 minutes or until well done.

Finally add the grated coconut and stir well for about a minute and switch off the stove.

Delicious and simple Beetroot Poriyal is ready to be enjoyed.

Serve this Beetroot Poriyal as a side dish with any South Indian meals, or sambar rice, rasam rice or can be had with rotis.
