Simple Semiya/Vermicelli Upma/Semiya Upma Recipe/Vermicelli Upma Recipe with step by step photos

This is a very simple and quick semiya upma which takes about 15 – 20 min to cook. I have added tomatoes because I like the tangy taste of it and my kids also like it this way. You can very well replace tomatoes with lemon juice. This is a very simple version of semiya upma without vegetables, I make it when I am lazy to cut vegetables and when I am in a time crunch. Here’s a very healthy chapathi made with spinach. It is always hard to get my daughter to eat the greens. Since she loves chapathis I try to make it with spinach or incorporate any other greens and give it to her. The only secret is whatever I make I should never reveal that it has healthy food hidden in it. But that doesn’t matter to me, unless and until they eat the food without wasting them. Kezhvaragu Koozh is a traditional Tamil Nadu dish which is an excellent cooler and nutritious one pot meal. This koozh is especially prepared in the month of “Aadi” for Amman and distributed to everybody in all the Amman temples and houses. In my mother’s house we prepare rice kanji for Amman, but in my in-laws it has been a tradition to prepare koozh for Amman. My MIL prepares koozh, mochai kottai kara kuzhambu, drumsticks leaves poriyal, Pidi kozhukkatai  and offer it to Amman in the month of “Aadi” and we all do special prayers and distribute it to everybody. Though I was not used to koozh, but after my marriage I have fallen in love with this healthy koozh. So this is my MIL’ s special Amman Koozh...

Most of the days, I just don’t plan much about what is to be cooked for breakfast or to pack for lunch. It is always in the last minute I decide to make something and get things done with. Today was one among them, I was really tired, so woke up late, had to pack lunch and send the kids to school. I ended up making Aval/Poha upma in a jiffy and everything was done on time. To my surprise I could get some clicks, I could read my husband’s thoughts “what on earth is she doing…”. But it’s ok, jobs done, wait not just done but well done. Soft Idli /Idli – Traditional South Indian Breakfast/Soft Idli Recipe

Idli is a very traditional and a common breakfast found in all most all houses in Tamil Nadu. Even though we make lots of breakfast dishes, still idli is the queen of all the breakfast varieties. It is a very healthy dish because it is steamed, easy digestible and packed with proteins and carbohydrates. These are the same reasons for which we start giving idlis even for babies at 4 or 5 months old. Ragi Kanji/Ragi Malt/Kelvaragu Kanji Recipe

Ragi kanji is a very healthy way to start your day. This is a perfect porridge even for small babies. I used to give this to my girl when she was 6 months, she was lactose intolerant. So I used to substitute milk with yogurt (thayir) and no sugar, just salt. When you start for your babies, give small quantities and gradually increase the amount. Later on when they turn older like 12 months or above you can start with the sathu maavu kanji available in shops or make it at home as well.

I grew up on ragi kanji when I was a kid, now my kids are having it. Even now me and my husband have it at least two or three times a week for breakfast.

Pesarattu is a very unique and a delicious dosa/crepe from Andhra Pradesh. It is made with whole green gram, the kids fall in love with this pesarattu  for its green color. It is very healthy and protein packed breakfast. This dosa does not need fermentation, can be made immediately after grinding.
Health benefits: It is highly rich in  fiber and protein. One cup of cooked green gram contains about 15 g of fiber and 14 g of protein. It has both insoluble and water soluble fiber. The water soluble fiber helps in reducing the cholesterol level. It digests slowly and gradually releases glucose, there by stabilizing the blood sugar level.
