Rice Flour Puttu With Idli Cooker/Arisi Maavu Puttu/Rice Flour Puttu Recipe/How to make Rice Flour Puttu with step by step photos

Rice flour puttu is a very traditional puttu made in Southern India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Rice flour for puttu is usually prepared in the house. But now I used the branded rice flour from the shop. Puttu is a very healthy and filling breakfast or as evening snack for kids. I have earlier posted Ragi puttu and Rava/Sooji puttu, check it out for step wise instructions with photos. Similar to Ragi puttu  and Rava/Sooji puttu I have made earlier I have used the Idli cooker to make this Rice puttu, but you can use the puttu maker as well. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Rice Kanji – Special Kanji Made for Amman/Rice Kanji Recipe

Friends, I will not be in town for another 5 days, I am taking a short break, will be missing you all. Before going on break, I wanted to post my favourite and delicious “Rice Kanji” which I prepared for amman and sharing it with you all. Om Shakthi…

There are different types of rice kanji prepared in South India like the roasted rice kanji, rice kanji with vegetables, rice kanji made with brown rice and so on. But this is a very special “Rice Kanji – Prepared for Amman” as neivedhyam in Nagapattinam and nearby districts.  This rice kanji is prepared in large scale instead of kezhvaragu koozh and distributed to everyone after the special prayers are done to amman. Along with this kanji the other neivedhyams prepared for amman are paanagam, neermor, maavilagu, thullu maavu etc. Since my parents are from Nagapattinam and Thanjavore we follow the same tradition of preparing rice kanji during the month of Aadi and offer it to amman and do the special prayers. I had mentioned about this rice kanji in few of my earlier post, but it is time for me to post this recipe as well. I will very soon be posting other types of kanji in my future post. For now...

You can very well replace tomatoes with lemon juice. This is a very simple version of semiya upma without vegetables, I make it when I am lazy to cut vegetables and when I am in a time crunch. I will post semiya upma with vegetables in my future post. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Spinach Chapathi/Palak Chapathi/Green Chapathi/Spinach Chapathi Recipe with step by step photos

Here’s a very healthy chapathi made with spinach. It is always hard to get my daughter to eat the greens. Since she loves chapathis I try to make it with spinach or incorporate any other greens and give it to her. The only secret is whatever I make I should never reveal that it has healthy food hidden in it. But that doesn’t matter to me, unless and until they eat the food without wasting them. This spinach chapathi is a very flavourful, colourful and healthy chapathis which your kids will surely love. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Kezhvaragu Koozh/Ragi Koozh/Finger Millet Porridge/Kezhvaragu Koozh Recipw with step by step photos

Kezhvaragu Koozh is a traditional Tamil Nadu dish which is an excellent cooler and nutritious one pot meal. This koozh is especially prepared in the month of “Aadi” for Amman and distributed to everybody in all the Amman temples and houses. In my mother’s house we prepare rice kanji for Amman, but in my in-laws it has been a tradition to prepare koozh for Amman. My MIL prepares koozh, mochai kottai kara kuzhambu, drumsticks leaves poriyal, Pidi kozhukkatai  and offer it to Amman in the month of “Aadi” and we all do special prayers and distribute it to everybody. Though I was not used to koozh, but after my marriage I have fallen in love with this healthy koozh. So this is my MIL’ s special Amman Koozh...

Kanchipuram Idli/Kanchipuram Idli Recipe/How to make Kanchipuram Idli with step by step photos

The moment we all hear the word Kanchipuram, things that come to our mind are the historical temples like the Vardharaja Perumal temple, Ekambareswarar temple, Kamakshi amman temple and the world famous, beautiful, hand-woven silk sarees. Talking about food, the Kanchipuram idlis also called as Kudalai idlis are very authentic and famous in this district. Originally these idlis are steamed in “Dhonnai” or in “Mandharai ilai”, these in fact add an unique taste to the idlis which is totally unbeatable and heavenly. But if you don’t get them in the place you live or do not have them in hand, just steam them in the regular idli plates. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Most of the days, I just don’t plan much about what is to be cooked for breakfast or to pack for lunch. It is always in the last minute I decide to make something and get things done with. Today was one among them, I was really tired, so woke up late, had to pack lunch and send the kids to school. I ended up making Aval/Poha upma in a jiffy and everything was done on time. To my surprise I could get some clicks, I could read my husband’s thoughts “what on earth is she doing…”. But it’s ok, jobs done, wait not just done but well done. This is mom's loving upma. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

Soft Idli /Idli – Traditional South Indian Breakfast/Soft Idli Recipe

Idli is a very traditional and a common breakfast found in all most all houses in Tamil Nadu. Even though we make lots of breakfast dishes, still idli is the queen of all the breakfast varieties. It is a very healthy dish because it is steamed, easy digestible and packed with proteins and carbohydrates. These are the same reasons for which we start giving idlis even for babies at 4 or 5 months old. This is the perfect idli my mom has been making for years, I learnt from her long time back and have been doing this the same way with no modifications. Meanwhile do check out other interesting and healthy Breakfast Recipes here.

So now let’s see how to make soft idli’s...

Ragi Kanji/Ragi Malt/Kelvaragu Kanji Recipe

Ragi kanji is a very healthy way to start your day. This is a perfect porridge even for small babies. I used to give this to my girl when she was 6 months, she was lactose intolerant. So I used to substitute milk with yogurt (thayir) and no sugar, just salt. When you start for your babies, give small quantities and gradually increase the amount. Later on when they turn older like 12 months or above you can start with the sathu maavu kanji available in shops or make it at home as well.

I grew up on ragi kanji when I was a kid, now my kids are having it. Even now me and my husband have it at least two or three times a week for breakfast.
