Method
Wash and soak the kadalai paruppu/channa dal for about 30 minutes.

Add about 2 cups of water and pressure cook the kadalai paruppu for about 4-5 whistles or until the dal is soft and mushy. Open the lid after the steam releases, mash the dal with potato masher and keep it aside.

Add ½ cup of water to jaggery and let it come to boil.

As soon as it starts to bubble add the mashed dal and mix really well or until well combined.

Now add the grated coconut, cardamom powder/Elachi Powder and mix thoroughly.

Let it cook until all the water evaporates and turns to thick dough.

Now switch off the stove and let it cool.

Make make small lemon sized balls with the dal mixture and keep it aside.

Preparing the outer cover of the Kozhukattai/Modhagam

Heat water, salt and sesame oil together in a pan. When the water starts to boil, add the flour and stir continuously. Make sure no lumps are formed and the flour gathers to a smooth dough. Switch off the stove.

Allow the dough to cool down for about 2-3 minutes. Knead the dough with your hands to make smooth dough.

Keep it covered with damp cloth until you are ready to make the kozhukattais.

When you are ready to make kozhukattais, grease your hands with oil and make small lemon sized balls with the dough.

With your fingers make small cup out of it as shown in the photo.

Now place the pooranam inside the cup. Make thin outer layer so that the modhakams will be soft and cooks faster. Close the cup to make the modakam. Make modakams/kozhukattais with rest of the balls as shown in the photo.

To make leaf shaped kozhukattai, place the pooranam inside the cup and fold along the edges and seal it tight by pressing them. Press with fork along the edges as shown in the photo.

Steam the modakams/kozhukattais in idli cooker for about 10 minutes or until the outside rice flour dough becomes shiny. Let it cool down for another 3-5 minutes.

Yes, delicious and healthy Modakam with Paruppu Poornam is ready for neivedhayam.

Suggestions:

Always keep the dough covered with a damp cloth, this will prevent the kozhukattais from cracking after steaming.
If you have left over pooranam, can be had as such or spread it on bread and enjoy as a sandwich.
