 Tomato Chutney is a very popular and common accompaniment served along with Idlis, Dosas, Kuzhi paniyaram etc. This is a delectable and tempting Chutney that is made with out onions. Here’s how to make Tomato Chutney with step by step photos…

Ingredients

Tomatoes/Thakkali

Urad Dal/Split Urad Dal

2.5 tsp

Dry Red Chillies

4

Garlic Cloves [optional]

5-6

Ginger

1 “ finely chopped

Curry Leaves

10-12

Salt

As needed

Oil

2 tsp

For Tempering

Oil

2 tsp

Mustard Seeds/Kadugu

½ tsp

Cumin Seeds/Jeeragam

½ tsp

Urad dal/Split Urad Dal

1 tsp

Curry Leaves

10-12

Method

Heat 2 tsp of oil in a pan, add split urad dal/urad dal and fry until the colour starts to change.

Add the dry red chillies, curry leaves and sauté well.

Add garlic cloves and saute until the raw smell starts to vanish.

At this stage add ginger pieces and saute well.

Now add the chopped tomatoes , salt and saute really well until they turn mushy for about 7-8 minutes and switch off the stove. You can sprinkle little water to cook the tomatoes as well

Let it cool down completely. Add the sautéed tomatoes to the mixer and grind it to fine paste.

Transfer the ground tomato chutney to a bowl.

Heat 2 tsp of oil, splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, curry leaves and saute for few seconds and switch off the stove.

Transfer the tempering to the Tomato Chutney.

Delicious and tempting Tomato Chutney is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it with steam cooked idlis, dosas etc.
