Method

Wash the fish thoroughly at least 3 to 4 times and drain the water completely. Now marinate the fish with the ingredients mentioned, cover and keep it in the refrigerator for one hour.

Then shallow fry the fish and keep it aside for later.

To make the gravy:

Heat oil in a pan, add cinnamon sticks, cardamom, cloves, curry leaves and wait until nice aroma arises. Add the curry leaves and fry for another 30 seconds.

Add the onions, green chillies and saute until translucent.

Now add the chopped ginger and garlic and fry until raw smell vanishes. I used ginger and garlic paste [2tbsp] instead of chopped ginger & garlic, so that it will be easy to feed my small girl.

Add the garam masala powder, pepper powder stir it well.

Add one cup of thin coconut milk, salt and let it come to boil.

Now add one cup of medium coconut milk and then the fried fish.

When it starts to boil, add ½ cup of thick coconut milk and let it come to boil.

Now add the sliced tomatoes, cover and cook for about 3-4 minutes and then switch off the stove.

Delicious, rich and creamy Fish Molee/Meen Molee is ready to be enjoyed. Serve them hot with a bowl of steamed rice.

  14. Hi Priya,
the coconut milk is from how many coconuts? In the Ingredients list, you mentioned 1 cup of thick coconut milk but you used 1/2 cup in the method? Can i use anything besides coconut?
    thank you

    1. Hi Paramis, thanks for pointing it out. It is 1/2 cup coconut milk only in the ingredients. It was a typing mistake. The coconut milk is from one coconut. The traditional dish goes by making with coconut milk, but if you want you can replace 50 % of coconut milk with regular milk. But I suggest you to use only use coconut milk for the original taste.
If you are using canned coconut milk, then use one can.[dilute according to the recipe]
Thank you so much for pointing out my mistake and I have fixed it now.
