Mochai kottai Masala/Field Beans Masala/Mochai Kottai Stir Fry

Mochai [fresh] is a type of field beans available in the market during winter. The same is dried and available in all provisional stores throughout the year. The dried Mochai [Tamil] is called as Mochai Kottai. This mochai kottai masala/stir fry is quite common in South India. The other most commonly prepared recipe with this bean is the mochai kottai kara kuzhambu, I will post this recipe in my future post soon. Here’s how to make Mochai Kottai Masala with step by step photos….


Ingredients

Mochai kottai/Firld Beans [dry]
1 cup
Onion
2 finely chopped
Tomato
2 finely chopped
Garlic Cloves
3-4 [crushed]
Red Chilli Powder
1 tsp
Coriander Powder
2 tsp
Turmeric Powder
¼ tsp
Garam Masala Powder
½ tsp
Cumin Powder
½ tsp
Salt
As Needed
Cilantro/Coriander leaves
1 tbsp finely chopped

For Tempering

Oil
1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds
½ tsp
Cumin Seeds
½ tsp
Urad Dal/Ullutham Paruppu
½ tsp
Curry leaves
5-10
Asafoetida Powder/Perungayam
One big pinch
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15-20 minutes
Serves: 3

Method

Wash and soak the dried field beans/mochai kottai overnight or for atleast 4-6 hours.


Pressure cook the mochai with little salt and enough water for three whistles.


Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds, now add cumin seeds, urad dal, asafoetida powder, curry leaves and saute for 20 seconds.


Add finely chopped onions and saute until the onions turn golden brown colour.


Now add finely chopped tomatoes and saute until they turn mushy.


Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder, cumin powder, little salt and mix thoroughly. Fry for about a minute or until raw smell vanishes.


Now add the cooked Mochai kottai/field beans and mix really well.


Add ¼ cup of water, cover and cook for about 3-5 minutes or until the water has evaporated and masala is well coated on all the beans.


Adjust the amount of water as per your requirement. Finely add the chopped cilantro and mix well.

Switch off the stove and transfer the Mochai Kottai Masala to the serving bowl.

Yes, delicious, healthy and protein packed side dish is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it rotis, puris, naans, chapathis, stuffing for sandwich or as side dish for any South Indian meals and rice varieties.
