This Squid Masala/Kanavai Masala is  a very famous Kerala cuisine of South India. Squid is consumed in many parts of the world. In India and Srilanka squid is eaten in coastal areas like Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They are either fried or made in to squid gravy. This squid masala is one of my favourite dish. It is very delicious and the most interesting part is, it can be cooked in 15 to 20 min.

This is a very simple and quick semiya upma which takes about 15 – 20 min to cook. I have added tomatoes because I like the tangy taste of it and my kids also like it this way. Oma podi/plain sev is always a must during Diwali in our house, the only reason being it is very easy. Vatha Kuzhambu (Sundakkai Vatha Kuzhambu)

Vatha kuzhambu is a very traditional and authentic dish made in Tamil Nadu. Here I have used Sundakkai vathal or Turkey berry (dried)/Bhankatiya [Hindi] to make this healthy and mind blowing gravy. Before going in to making of this vatha kuzhambu I surely want to share the importance and the benefits of sundakkai. Sundakkai is called as Turkey berry; it has extraordinary medicinal values which can cure many diseases. Turkey berry is a green colored fruit with bitter taste, it can be used fresh or in dried form as vathal. Turkey berries (sundakkai) have the ability to kill the germs, helps in controlling diabetes, gastric problems and when consumed on daily basis helps in strengthening the bones and nerves.

Kezhvaragu Koozh is a traditional Tamil Nadu dish which is an excellent cooler and nutritious one pot meal. This koozh is especially prepared in the month of “Aadi” for Amman and distributed to everybody in all the Amman temples and houses. In my mother’s house we prepare rice kanji for Amman, but in my in-laws it has been a tradition to prepare koozh for Amman. My MIL prepares koozh, mochai kottai kara kuzhambu, drumsticks leaves poriyal, Pidi kozhukkatai  and offer it to Amman in the month of “Aadi” and we all do special prayers and distribute it to everybody.
