Aloo Bonda/Potato Bonda/Urulai Kizhangu Bonda

Cook anything with potatoes and we (my family) are there right away. Potato bondas are very addictive evening snack, once you start eating them you will not stop until it is done. The potato is made with wonderful blend of spices, dipped in the batter and then deep fried in oil.

Here’s how to make Aloo Bonda/Potato Bonda with step by step photos…

Ingredients

Potato
4
Onion
1 big[finely chopped]
Green chillies
2 or 3
Ginger & Garlic paste
1 tsp
Red chilli powder
1 tsp
Coriander powder
1 ½ tsp
Turmeric powder
½ tsp
Cumin powder
½ tsp
Garam masala powder
½ tsp
Salt
As needed
Oil
For frying the bondas

For Tempering

Oil
3 tsp
Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Urad dal
1 tsp
Bengal gram dal/Kadalai paruppu
1 tsp
Curry leaves
5-6

For The Batter

Besan flour
1 cup
Rice flour
½ cup
Red chilli powder
¾ tsp
Asafoetida/Perungayam
One pinch
Cooking soda
One pinch
Food color
One pinch [optional]
Salt
As needed

 Method

Wash and boil the potatoes, now peel them and mash them well.

Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds. Now add cumin seeds, urad dal, Bengal gram dal, curry leaves and saute until the dal turn golden brown.

Add the onions, green chillies and saute until it turn golden brown. Now add the ginger & garlic paste and saute until the raw smell goes off.

Now add red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, salt and saute for about 3 – 4 min or until the raw smell vanishes.

Add the mashed potatoes and mix really well and cook for another 4 – 5 min or until all the masala is infused well.

Switch off the stove and let the potato masala cool down.

Drizzle about 1 tsp of oil to the potato masala and make small balls.

Now prepare the batter with the ingredients mentioned above (for batter) by slowly adding water. Make a little thicker batter for the bondas. Food color is optional, you can replace the food color with turmeric powder.

In a kadai, heat the oil for frying the bondas. Drop the potato masala balls in the batter, make a coating of batter on the balls and slowly drop it in to the hot oil.

Fry the bondas to golden brown color equally on all the sides.

Yummy and delicious Aloo Bondas/Potato Bondas are ready. Serve it with a cup of hot tea and have a pleasant evening.

So guys don’t wait, just make it  and enjoy…

  2. I can't say no to bonda, mostly because I like the potato filling. Shy to share because I just dig into the filling and throw away the flour coating on top.
