Red Chilli Coconut Chutney/Thengai Chutney with Vara Milagai [Side dish for Idlis, dosas, paniyarams & bondas]

Red chilli coconut chutney is yet another delectable chutney prepared in South India as side dish for idlis, dosas etc. Earlier I had posted coconut chutney made with green chillies. I also have many other variations in chutneys that I am planning to post in the future. Please check my other  Chutney Varieties here..

Here’s how to make Red Chilli Coconut Chutney with step by step photos….

Ingredients
Coconut [grated]
½ cup
Roasted gram dal/Pottukadalai
2 tbsp
Dry Red chillies
2 or 3
Garlic cloves
3
Ginger
1 inch piece
Tamarind
Small goose berry size ball
Salt
As needed

For Tempering
Oil
2 tsp
Mustard seeds
1 tsp
Cumin seeds
1 tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Dry red chillies
2
Asafoetida
1 pinch
Curry leaves
8-10

Method

Grind the coconut, roasted gram dal, dry red chillies, garlic cloves, ginger, tamarind and salt together in a blender. Add required amount of water and make it in to fine paste. Transfer the chutney to a bowl and keep it aside.

Heat oil in a kadai and splutter the mustard seeds. Now add cumin seeds, urad dal, dry red chillies, asafoetida, curry leaves and saute for about 15 sec. Switch off the stove and add the tempering to the chutney.

Super delicious, spicy and yummy Red chilli coconut chutney is ready to be enjoyed. Serve it with hot dosas, idlis or bondas.
