Paruppu Thogaiyal/Thoor Dal Thogaiyal

Paruppu thogaiyal is a traditional South Indian dish. It is very simple, quick and healthy thogaiyal made within 15 min. I still remember the days when my mom is sick, my dad makes this simple thogaiyal and serves it with rasam and white rice.   Check out other delectable chutneys here.

Here’s how to make paruppu thogaiyal with photos…

Thoor dal/Thuvaram paruppu
 ½ cup
Dry red chillies
3
Garlic
3 cloves
Black pepper corns
½ tsp
Salt
As needed

To Temper

Mustard seeds
½ tsp
Cumin seeds
½ tsp
Asafoetida
A pinch
Curry leaves
8 - 10

Tempering is optional you can skip this step…

Method

In a pan heat 1 tsp of oil and roast the thoor dal in a low flame, until it you get nice aroma and the dal changes color. Transfer it to a plate and keep it aside.

In the same pan roast the red chillies, garlic and black pepper and switch off the stove.
Let the dal, red chillies, garlic and pepper cool down.

Now grind the roasted ingredients with salt in the mixer. Sprinkle some water when grinding to maintain thick consistency and see to that it is coarse and not very fine.

Transfer it to a bowl and keep it aside. Authentic and delicious thogaiyal is ready to be enjoyed.

In a pan heat 1 tsp of oil and temper the ingredients mentioned and add it to the thogaiyal. This step is totally optional, but I love the taste of curry leaves and mustards in the thogaiyal so I temper them.

Yummy thogaiyal is served with kaara kuzhambu or even with simple rasam and white rice.

  2. The grinding is what kills me. I know I can use the processor but I don't have it. We love this chutney like combo of paruppu, flavored with the rest of the ingredient for the flavors and fragrance.
