Onion Tomato Chutney Recipe[Side dish for idlis, dosas, uthappam, etc]/Kaara Chutney

Chutneys play a vital role in South Indian breakfast. I always tend to make different types of chutneys for breakfast or dinner so that I don’t get bored cooking and my family doesn’t get bored eating the same type of chutney again and again. Today I made very simple and easy onion tomato chutney which can be made in a breeze. Do not forget to check out other delectable and mouth-watering Chutney/Thogaiyal varieties here.

Here’s how to make Onion Tomato chutney with step by step photos…

Ingredients

Onion
2 [cut to cubes]
Tomatoes
3 [cut to cubes]
Garlic
5 cloves
Dry red chillies
2
Salt
As needed

For Tempering

Oil
2 tsp
Mustard seeds
¼ tsp
Urad dal
½ tsp
Asafoetida
One pinch
Curry leaves
6-8
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serves: 3-4

Method

Wash and cut the tomatoes and onions to cubes.

Add onions, tomatoes, garlic, red chillies to the mixer and blend it to fine paste.

Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, then add asafoetida and curry leaves and fry for about 20 -30 secs.

Now add the ground onion & tomato paste, salt mix well and sauté for about 5 minutes.

Add about ¼ cup of water and cook well until the raw smell vanishes.

Finally adjust the taste and wait until it reaches thick consistency and then switch off the stove.
