Vadai Curry/Vada Curry/Side Dish for Idlis and Dosas/Vada Curry Recipe

Today I am going to share a very traditional and famous South Indian delight – Vadai Curry, which is served as side dish for idlis and dosas. Vadai Curry is a flavourful and tasty gravy, the vadais are prepared separately and then dunked into the freshly prepared gravy and cooked together for a while. All the flavors and spices get infused into the crumbled vadai and it taste heavenly. Mullangi Chutney/Radish Chutney/Mooli Chutney

Radish is an edible root vegetable, with numerous health benefits. Radish is a very common vegetable consumed around the world because it grows really fast. It is available in different size and shapes in white and red colours depending on the climatic conditions in which it grows. It has very less calories, high water content, rich in vitamin C and fiber. They are also rich in wide range of essential vitamins and minerals like potassium, folate, manganese, copper, magnesium, calcium, vitamin B6 etc.  Radishes can be either cooked or can be had raw in salads. The thalippu vadagam is bundled with flavour and aroma, which kick starts our senses the moment you smell it.  It is used especially for tempering kaara kuzhambu, vatha kuzhambu, fish/meen kuzhambu etc, which adds extraordinary flavour, taste and aroma. This chutney is very special and quick chutney that can be made in minutes. You all must be surprised with the name “rosapoo” – yes that is how it is called in Nagapattinam. When I was a small kid, I used to think this chutney had rosapoo(rose) in it, very funny…

But my mom used to say, this chutney is made of sambar vengayam, red chillies and tamarind which give a beautiful color, from which it gets its name. This is my mom’s special recipe, she makes this is in ammi (grinding stone) it gives heavenly taste.  Check out other delectable chutneys here.

Bombay Chutney/Besan Chutney/Kadalai Maavu Chutney

Besan Chutney or Kadalai Maavu Chutney, otherwise called as Bombay Chutney is a very easy and quick dish that can be made with very little ingredients and is perfect side dish for Idlis, Dosas, Pooris, Chapathis etc. Bombay Chutney is the South Indian version of Pitla - a traditional Maharashtrian curry made with Besan Flour, onions and green chillies, it is also famous in the regions of Karnataka. This chutney can be prepared without any vegetables, without coconut and the best part is no grinding is involved. Today I am going to share a very authentic recipe from Thirunelveli District – Ellu Thuvaiyal. Usually this ellu thuvaiyal is paired with Ullundhu Sadam which I will be posting soon.
